Ash

Ash’s ass had gone numb from sitting on the floor for so long, but he hadn’t been able to pull himself from a sleeping Reka.

He was glad she’d finally accepted the painkiller, and that she was getting some rest.

“How are you doing?” Dark asked, coming up beside him. There was dried blood on his T-shirt, from when he’d loaded Griffin onto the helicopter. Ash knew his own shoulders were bloody as well, under the black T-shirt he wore.

So much blood.

He looked at Slate, who was once again checking his brother’s constants.

“Is he going to be okay?”

“Slate seems to think so, and I trust him,” Dark said. “Are you okay, Ash?”

Ash thought for a moment. In the last days, he’d done things he wished he would forget. He knew the memory of Reka’s slim body beneath his as he pretended to fuck her would haunt him for the rest of his life. He’d failed to rescue Reka’s friend, and the other women. And Afsan was still free.

He sighed. But Reka was safe. He felt her pulse beating strongly against his skin where their hands still touched.

That would have to be enough, for now.

“I’m okay,” he said.

Dark looked at their joined hands, but didn’t say anything.

“Your knee?”

“It’ll be fine,” Ash said. Somehow, it was the least of his worries at the moment. “Any more news from the Turkish police? Have they found Afsan?”

Afsan had been gone from the palace by the time the police arrived.

Fucker.

“No sign of him, so far. Five men were arrested, at Afsan’s palace or close by. They are being kept for questioning. So far, none of them remember seeing Afsan at all.”

“Five men? There were a lot more than that.”

Dark shrugged. “I know. And with Reynold’s intelligence, and the descriptions we get from you and Griffin, we should be able to find some of them.”

“What about the women?”

“The police rescued twelve of them. Several embassies are now involved, to make sure they get sent back to their home countries, or wherever they choose to go. It appears most of them were refugees running from their own country, so it’s a sensitive situation.”

“So there are three women missing.”

Dark nodded. “Including Chloe, yes. It’s possible Afsan took them.”

“God.”

“I know this is hard to hear, Ash, but this was a good outcome. You did a good job out there,” Dark said, clapping him on the shoulder. “Don’t second-guess yourself, okay?”

Ash made what he hoped was a noncommittal noise, when what he really wanted to do was punch someone. But not Dark. Dark was a good team leader, and Ash understood what he was saying.

When Dark moved away, he went back to watching Reka sleep.

The change in ambient noise as the pilot changed the angle of the rotors to get the machine ready for landing woke her up. Even with the dark smudges under her eyes, she was still the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Ash wondered what she would look like when she was rested and happy.

“Where—“she began, licking her dry lips.
